Gregory D. Woodworth

As a mediator, Greg brings to the table not only his extensive trial experience, his legal acumen, and his ability to analyze risk, but just as importantly, his common sense, his passion for resolving conflict, and his ability and willingness to empathize and listen.  He most recently served for over a decade as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of National Life Group, one of America’s oldest life insurance companies.  At National Life, he led the legal and compliance teams during a period of extraordinary growth for the company.

Prior to National Life, Greg led the litigation department at MassMutual. He earlier was Counsel and Assistant Vice President for UNUM Corporation. At the outset of his career he was an associate, then partner, at Pierce Atwood in Portland, Maine where he was a trial lawyer.  He is a member of ARIAS US and serves as an arbitrator in reinsurance disputes.

Throughout Greg’s legal career, spanning more than 35 years, he has had responsibility for hundreds of litigated matters, including a number of significant, complex class action matters.

Greg led a trial team that successfully tried a certified class action to verdict in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and has orchestrated, through lengthy mediation processes, two nationwide class action settlements.  He personally tried or has been responsible for dozens of cases that have gone to verdict. He has participated in a significant number of mediations.  Throughout, Greg has come to understand the expense, distraction, and pitfalls of litigation. He has experienced how mediation creates resolution that benefits both parties.
